Curtain call for Sidewinders....

"Sidewinders: A Perpensockular pattern." by Nona. To recap: This was a serialized pattern offered on Nonaknits. (Go for the details...go for the pattern...go for the fun!)

Circular size US2 (although knit back and forth, the flexibility of the cable needle was needed)
Opal yarn (colorway Hundertwassers Werk 897 Silver Spiral). AKA: Wild and crazy!

I am amazed at how well these socks fit. I have worn sock #1 while making sock #2 - testing the fit and feel...would it fall down? Stretch out? etc... Verdict is...it is a terrific fit! The pattern explains that gauge is critical, but once you get gauge, Nona offers a great deal of sizes from which to chose.

If anyone wants a very unique sock knitting experience, I would highly recommend this design.
Thanks Nona!

OK - Now, I must get back to my "Must have cardigan". I can see how folks get so many projects going on once....

The Grand Finale!!

It's a sock! And, an amazingly well fitting one too, I might add!! I am very pleased indeed. Life got in the way of my knitting yesterday, so today I had to get caught back up, and finish with today's installment of the pattern. The final act was to Kitchener the center back, all the way down to the toe. Then there was a short horizontal seam that needed to be grafted too. Totally magical.... I plan to start the mate tomorrow morning...bright and early. Great fun, and the pattern was just meticulously written! Nona formatted it in a huge range of sizes. Truly one of the best written patterns I have ever used. My hats off to you, Nona!!
And as promised, progress on my sleeves. The photo is horrid, please forgive, but you get the general idea. I have not been a TOTAL slacker.... :)

It's a Toe!

Today we finished the "Toe pocket" and the other 1/2 of the instep. Starting to look a little more like a sock...
Especially when I "try" to try it on. I think you get the idea.

While I have been having fun with this project, I am still working on my cardi. I guess it "Must have Sleeves" so, hopefully, they will be worthy of a progress photo tomorrow.

Sidewinder update

This could actually be a sock soon! Today we shaped the first 1/2 of the toe using paired increases every row. Nona's instructions couldn't be any better written. I think it is basically 1/2 of a sock at this point. I am beginning to understand what I am knitting even! Cool, huh!!

A new wheel??

I have seen a few sideways-knit sock patterns. I have never been too intrigued. But, Nona of Nonaknits has recently "re designed the wheel". She was not overly thrilled with the patterns she had found, and has created her own version. She posted the preliminary information yesterday, and encouraged us to swatch in preparation for the first installment of her "Sidewinders" sock pattern. So, her you have it:

While I am pretty much knitting blindly, I trust that this is eventually going to be a sock! In it's current state, there is a 8 stitch deep double garter stitch ribbed cuff, going down into a Stockinette leg and foot. The back of the leg has a garter section, hugging the ankle. There is a little short row shaping for the calf. The mitered area is the heel section. The toe will "magically" appear during tomorrow's progress (Hope so anyway!)

While I cannot compare this to any of the other sideways patterns, it is fun, interesting, and a good diversion to my "normal" knitting. Her instructions are very well written and concise. The yarn is a crazy Opal, that I think was one that originally had the sideways pattern included in it's ball band. (I don't read German, but I think it is.)

On another note: Sofee sends her thanks for all the nice comments she has received during the last few days. She is not very interested in this new sock technique, and appears to be catching up on her sleep today.

"Yeah, right mom. I just know if I wake up, you'll make me go "out" in the rain!"
